Christmas Advent Devotional, Day 11: "Christ the Creator"

John 1:1-3

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.  (NKJV)

As a child, I saw God, the Father, as the central figure of the Old Testament and Jesus, the Son, as the central figure or the New Testament. As I have studied my Bible, carefully reading it from cover to cover, I have discovered that all three parts of the Trinity are displayed throughout both the Old and New Testaments.

Jesus did not just come into being on the day God, the Holy Spirit, overshadowed Mary and planted Jesus in her womb.  No!  On Day 1 of Creation, He was there.

The Apostle John uses the name or title “the Word” to refer to Jesus.  In this passage, he shows that at the very beginning of the Creation of the World, Jesus was both present and an active part in its creation.

All things were made by Him.  The starry host?  Jesus made it.  The vast expanse of oceans?  Jesus brought it into being.  The lion, the lamb and the leech?  Yes! All of it- was Jesus’ creation.

The day, the light, the mountainous peak and the mighty Redwood are works of His hands.  Or rather, works of His Word.

Have you ever crafted something?  A big project that took weeks?  If so, you understand the personal investment and pride that comes from creating.  Jesus created all that we see.  He was part of creating Adam and Eve.  Can you imagine how He and the Father felt about the corruption of their beautiful, perfect creation?

We need only to look to Jesus to see the answer.  He loved His creation too much to leave it corrupted, tainted and spoiled.

Have you ever watched a show or movie where the writer jumped inside the TV and into his/her own story?  In essence, that is what Jesus did.  He went from being removed from the dirty underbelly of humankind to living among them, dressed in their clothes- the tent of the body.  He walked their earth and experienced their emotions.  He grieved, He hungered and He was tired.  Never believe the lie that Jesus does not love us!

Today, reflect on this truth:

The Creator became the Child... the Christ... the Crucified!
