Christmas Advent Devotional Day 23: God My Savior

An undisclosed period of time had passed from Gabriel’s appearance to Mary and when she arrived to visit Elizabeth.  In the previous verses we saw Mary’s arrival result in Elizabeth and John being filled with the Spirit, and Elizabeth being used by the Holy Spirit to confirm many things Gabriel had spoken.  Mary has had some time to not only be filled with the Spirit, but also with Messiah (prior to reaching Elizabeth’s house).  She has digested all that is to come and now she breaks forth in song:

Luke 1:46-47

46 And Mary said:

My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. (NKJV)

Mary’s response to all the mind-bending, earth-shaking, prophecy-fulfilling events is to worship! When we catch God being God, that should be our response as well.  When He does things, that we do not understand, we worship.  When He fulfills promises and aligns people, we worship.  When Jesus comes to us offering salvation, we worship!  That is a proper response to God, all day, every day.

Mary magnifies the Lord.  She recognizes who He is and what He has done.  She makes His presence great in her life and allows everything else to fall in line in relation to that. Mary’s soul (her mind, her will, her emotions) magnifies the Lord. And her spirit- the eternal part of her- rejoices in God. Just as Gabriel stated.  Just as Elizabeth had declared.  The coming of Christ resulted in uncontainable joy and rejoicing.

Not only did Mary rejoice in God, but she recognized Him as her personal Savior.  The personal adjective “my” is so important.  God was, is, and evermore shall be, Savior!  But until you accept Him in your heart as Mary did, He cannot be your Savior.  He is a personal God and He requires a personal response.

If He is not yet your personal Lord and Savior, pray with me today:

Lord, I believe that you are God. I believe that Jesus, Your Son, came and died for me to pay the price for my sins.  I confess my sins before you now.  My guilt.  And I ask you to come into my heart. Wash me, make me clean.  Live within me, oh Lord!  Make me new.  In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

If you prayed that prayer with me, please reach out and let me know.  I would love to pray for you personally and tell you about the next steps for your new life.
