Christmas Advent Devotional Day 25: Worthy of Worship

Luke 1:50-52

50 And His mercy is on those who fear Him
From generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with His arm;
He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52 He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
And exalted the lowly. (NKJV)

The consistency of God is amazing!  He is the same, yesterday, today and forever. Those that fear Him (have reverential respect and awe) are shown mercy.  That means that we do not get what we deserve.  We are all sinners, deserving of death and hell.  But if we fear Him enough to submit to His will, He pours out His mercy on us- from generation to generation.  It was not just the first descendants of Abraham who enjoyed this gift, but it is a gift renewable to any generation who calls on His name.

In the Old Testament, God set forth blessing to those who obeyed Him and cursing on those who rebelled against Him. To those who align with Him, His mighty arm is extended either in their defense or to uphold them in the day of trouble. For those not following His ways, His arm is at work, scattering them abroad from God’s Promised Land. He lets the proud follow their own imaginations to their detriment. But the godly, He corrects and protects.

God defeats and brings low earthly kings who do not follow His ways.  The powerful are no match for Him.  But He simultaneously lifts up those who are lowly.  Just ask Mary. She had gone from being a nobody to being the most blessed woman to ever exist!

Something Earth- shattering was happening.  God had lowered Himself to a human form- as a tiny, vulnerable infant. He was coming into the world to restore lost humanity.  Everything was changing! Yet Mary’s worship was just like that of the Patriarchs of old.  The Old Testament heroes of the faith worshiped God just like Mary.

What God is doing in our lives should result in worship.  But understanding the nature of God is as timeless as the Ancient of Days Himself.  When we lift Him up, He draws near!
