Christmas Advent Devotional Day 6: Wonderful Name

Isaiah 9:6

For Unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (NKJV, emphasis mine)

From this verse we see that the coming Messiah would be called many names.  In this section, it seems that His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, and Mighty God. I am not aware of any occurrences in the Bible of Jesus being called by the names "wonderful" or "counselor", but certainly people found His Name (His character and all He represented) to be wonderful.  He surely gave wisdom and counsel with every word He spoke.  His counsel was always in line with that of His Father and in agreement with the Holy Spirit.  He possessed the Words of Life and spoke and taught them so that His hearers could find their way to Him- the Mediator, Savior, and Deliverer.

According to Strong’s Concordance, the world wonderful pele', means a miracle. And from Brown-Driver-Briggs' Hebrew Definition, it means 1. wonder, marvel a. wonder (extraordinary, hard to understand thing) b. wonder (of God's acts of judgment and redemption)

The birth of Christ truly was a miracle- He was born of a virgin. Unprecedented!  It was a miracle that God saw fit to place the Seed of the Savior into a human.  Not only that, but His ministry was trademarked with signs and wonders.  The miraculous occurred wherever He went.  His very life and earthly existence were a wonder of redemption toward mankind.

According to Strong’s Concordance, the word for Counselor is â‛atsr
yaw-ats', A primitive root; to advise; reflexively to deliberate or resolve. KJV Usage: advertise, take advice, advise (well), consult, (give take) counsel (-lor), determine, devise, guide, purpose.

Some translations do not have a comma between wonderful and counselor.  Either way, the meaning is clear. He would be everything associated with wonderful and He would be a Counselor/advisor.

Jesus, our Messiah, would resolve every problem of every human, past, present, and future... for all eternity. He would advise His followers well, He would give teaching and counsel, and He would surely guide.

In the tiny package of “our gift”, the Son of God, contains all miraculous wonders and advice that we will ever need to live this life.  Everything good… everything worthwhile… everything redemptive, is found in His Name.  In His person.

Oh, Lord, today I pray for those needing a miracle from Your Name.  For everyone who needs guidance or counsel.  Lord, I know that you possess all these things and I ask that you reveal that aspect of yourself today to those reading these words. Let there be full revelation of all the wonder that is included in your Name. Let there be peace that comes from wise counsel and solid advice, as they listen to You speak direction into their life and circumstances.  In Jesus’ Wonderful Name. Amen!
